  16. Why does the Player disconnect sometimes when it starts playing content?

  1. I am getting no sound. What do I do now?

Check the Security settings in your Internet Explorer Browser. Click on Tools-->Internet Options-->Security-->Custom Level

  2. I upgraded to Windows Media 9 and I am getting "..error SOURCE FILTER cannot be found"

If you are getting the error SOURCE FILTER cannot be found, this is related to the upgrade to Windows Media Player 9. For some listeners changing IE to your default browser fixes this problem. If that doesn't work, see next paragraph. We are working with Microsoft to address the issue. The only current fix that we know of is to roll back to your previous version of Windows Media Player. To roll back, go into control panels and then add remove programs then remove Windows Media Player 9. This will roll your system back to the previous version. We are trying to find a solution to this.

  3. I keep getting 'Cannot Open" when I try to listen to the station. What can I do?

The 'Cannot Open' error can be the result of many different issues. The most common is a personal firewall, corporate firewall or privacy software. If you have a personal firewall or privacy software, try disabling it temporarily to see if it works. The second most common issue is that your temporary Internet files (cache) is full. Windows Media Player and Internet Explorer may not have deleted enough cache to start playing the stream. To open Internet Explorer, click on Tools in the menu bar and select Internet Options... In the middle section under Temporary Internet Files, click on Delete Files... If none of the above solve your problem, note that it is possible that the station is down or there is a problem between the station and the stream provider. There is nothing that the listener can do to resolve this. The majority of the time the stream provider is aware of the situation and is working to resolve it. It you receive this error for more than 24 hours let us know and we will look into it.

  4. How do I clear out my computer's cache?

    1. Open your Internet Exlporer Browser.
    2. Click Tools, and then choose Internet Options.
    3. Under the General Tab look at the middle section for Temporary Internet Files.
    4. Click on Delete Files... button.
    5. When the Delete Files button opens click OK to delete the files.
    6. Close the Internet Options button
    7. Reload the webpage of the station you want to listen to and click on Listen Live Button.

  5. Audio plays, but there are a lot of pauses and the player says "buffering."

The player is most likely experiencing network congestion, meaning there is not enough available bandwidth to stream the selected file. When using a TCP connection, the data in the player's buffer will be used to supplement the stream until the buffer is depleted. Once the buffered data is gone, the player will pause, replenish the buffer, and resume playing, using this new buffer to supplement the playback stream bandwidth. This cycle will continue until network conditions improve. Try again when the network is less congested, or select content that is authored for lower bandwidths.

  6. Content plays, but the quality is poor.

Content served by Windows Media Technologies is created for specific bandwidth ranges. If the content is created for a 28.8 Kbps or 56 Kbps connection but Internet traffic is heavy, the NetShow Services server will start to drop the frame rate (frames per second) to compensate for increase of network congestion, causing the video to be jerky and uneven. Try again when the connection is better, or be sure to select content that's targeted for the bandwidth you have available. The quality of the audio or video may also be poor because of the content creator's compression choices. In order to compress content for play over constrained bandwidth networks such as the Internet, mathematical algorithms called codecs are applied to the content. The content creator's codec selection greatly influences the quality the user sees or hears. For example, if the content creator prioritized audio quality over video quality or frame rate, you may enjoy the audio but be frustrated by the video.

  7. Everything is playing too fast. It sounds like the chipmunks. What can I do?

This is caused by out of date software. Most commonly, old sound card drivers. Visit your sound card manufacture's web site, download and install the latest drivers. Before trying to listen again, make sure that you are up-to-date with your Internet Browser.

  8. How do I increase the contrast in the Player?

If it is difficult to see the text in the user interface of Windows Media Player 10, you can increase the contrast by doing the following:
    1. Click Now Playing.
    2. Click the Select Now Playing Options button, point to Enhancements, and then click Color Chooser.
    3. In the Color Chooser, select the Use black as Player background color check box.

  9. Why can't I change the location of the Player installation?
The installation location is a requirement of the Microsoft Windows operating system. It cannot be changed.

  10. What can I do about video problems (such as if green or pink lines appear on the video, flickering or choppy video, the Player stops responding when playing video, and so on)?

Check for updates for the driver software for your graphics adapter and Microsoft DirectX® from the Windows Update page.
If that doesn't solve the problem, turn down (or turn off) video acceleration. To do this in Windows Media Player 9 Series or later, do the following:
    1. On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Performance tab.
    2. In the Video acceleration area, move the slider to turn down or turn off video acceleration.

  11. Why does the Player stop playing in full-screen mode?

Make sure your screen saver isn't kicking you out of full-screen mode. Also, turning of the Enable full-screen mode switch feature might solve the problem. In Windows Media Player 9 Series or later, do the following:
    1. On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Performance tab.
    2. Click Advanced.
    3. Clear the Enable full-screen mode switch check box.
Note that for Windows XP, full-screen controls disappear if you stop moving the mouse and the cursor is not hovering over the controls. If you want the controls to disappear more quickly, you can clear the Display full-screen controls check box (also located on the Advanced dialog box).

  12. Why doesn't my video appear unless I maximize the window, put another window in front of it, or something similar?

There is a problem with the driver software for your graphics adapter. Check for updated drivers from the Windows Update page.

If that doesn't solve the problem, turn down (or turn off) video acceleration. In Windows Media Player 9 Series or later, do the following:
    1. On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Performance tab. 2. In the Video acceleration area, move the slider to turn down or turn off video acceleration.

  13. Video isn't playing correctly when I play a playlist. How can I fix the problem?

If you find that a video disappears or turns purple and green about 20 seconds before it stops playing, or that video for every file in the playlist isn't displayed, turn off overlays.

To turn off overlays in Windows Media Player 9 Series or later, do the following:
    1. On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Performance tab.
    2. Click Advanced.
    3. Clear the Use overlays check box.

If the problem continues, try turning off the video mixing renderer (VMR). You can turn off the VMR by clearing the Use video mixing renderer check box (available in the same location as the Use overlays check box).

  14. How do I stop the Player from acting as if I'm always offline (or returning error codes 0xCOOD1126 or 0xC00D11B3)?

Make sure that the Work Offline command on the File menu is not selected. If you are using Windows Media Player 9 Series or later, and you know that your computer is connected to the Internet, click the Connect the Player link that is displayed in the Guide when it is offline. Also, you can force the Player to connect to the Internet by doing the following:
    1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
    2. In the Player tab, select the Connect to the Internet (overrides other commands) check box.

If the problem continues, run the Internet Connection Wizard by doing the following:
    1. Click Start, click Run, and then type icwconn1.exe.
    2. Click OK.

  15. When I try to play video files streamed from the Internet, why do I only hear the audio?

For Windows Media Player 7 or later, when you receive streamed content, communication occurs between the Player and a Windows Media server regarding the connection speed of your computer. If the Player communicates an incorrect connection speed to the server, the server may try to thin the stream, which means that the stream quality decreases and the Player may lose video altogether.

You can prevent this from happening accidentally by manually specifying the connection speed. In Windows Media Player 7 or later, you can specify your connection speed, by doing the following:
    1. On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Performance tab.
    2. In the Connection speed area, click Choose connection speed, and then select the appropriate connection speed.

  16. Why does the Player disconnect sometimes when it starts playing content?

Windows Media Player may be detecting your connection speed incorrectly.

For Windows Media Player 7 or later, you can manually specify your connection speed. For information on how to specify your connection speed, see question 15.
